Now if you haven't traveled with an infant or toddler during nap time, I highly recommend it! Oh the music that one so small can bring is such a joy to listen to! We planned on leaving right after lunch on Wednesday in hopes that Ladybug would sleep through the ~2 hour drive. It took us closer to 3 with the road construction though. My father and brother were wise. They volunteered to drive the two demons known as Frog and Monkey. It is rather easy to chauffeur the two demons though- add two Game boy's and two IPods and you wont hear a word from them for the entire trip. Mom and I got mini-demon though. We got on the road and she alternated screaming and crying for the first 30 minutes before she fell asleep. Ah blissful silence all the way to the road construction about 30 minutes outside Seward. Then another 30 minutes of screaming mixed with some crying. Just to keep it fresh. (When I say screaming, she is mad, not upset. if she was upset, we would have pulled over and gotten out until she calmed down)
We got to Seward and stayed at a lovely campground called Millers Landing. This location is right on the beach where sea otters and whales are regularly spotted. There is cabins, RV hook-ups and tent spots available which makes it very versatile. For our trip we got two cabins that had 4 bunk beds each. Girls in one, Guys in the other. Getting to Seward about 4pm made it possible for us to check in and then spend some time on the beach throwing rocks and playing in the kelp. It also gave the dog a chance to run and stretch her legs, which she needed desperately. The kids would skip a rock and Kali would run after it chasing it till it sank in the water. She would then run after the next rock to fly.
Thursday saw a cloudy day, but we weren't deterred. My brother, dad, the boys and I all braved the gray day to go enjoy a lovely ~4 mile Kayak from Millers Landing to Caine's Head. We were lucky that the ocean was like glass, with little wind. We saw Sea Otters, bait balls, waterfalls, glaciers, and many different birds on our Kayak. Once we got to Derby Beach, we went for a 2.5 mile hike to the old fort. There we got to explore and enjoy the amazing scenery. A quick dash back to the beach gave us just enough time to enjoy lunch with mom and Ladybug who came out via water taxi before our ride returned to bring us back. The rain started about half way through lunch, but even though it was damp, it was fun. Dinner ended up being hot dogs and smore's on the camp fire, YUM YUM!
Friday saw some Hiking and Fishing as the sun came out, making it a beautiful day and Saturday we visited the Sea Life Center before heading home. All in all an excellent trip! Pictures will be coming soon.
